Forum Rules

The MMN portal forums provide opportunities for members to network, exchange ideas and engage in discussions on topics of common interest.

Below are some simple guidelines on how to participate in the forums:

  • Write in the first person (e.g. I agree with the comment by XY but I also believe…)
  • Use humor and sarcasm with caution. Use emoticons (e.g. smiley faces) to communicate that you are joking to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Be aware that the people you interact with online are human and so are you!
  • Try to refer to people’s names as you respond to messages
  • Avoid long responses. Try to limit your postings to up to 2-3 paragraphs
  • Follow the same principles of behavior online that you follow in face-to-face encounters: Be polite!
  • Disagree with the ideas and not the people
  • Show respect for other people’s postings, ideas, and selves
  • Share your ideas with others
  • Avoid flaming and help others avoid flaming as well (flaming: the demonstration of angry, hostile behavior via inappropriate text messages). Do not post racist or 'hateful' material.
  • Don’t abuse the power you are given online. Don't post trolls, spam, ads or other junk.
  • You can disagree, but at the same time provide constructive criticism to other people’s views
  • Be understanding and forgiving of other people's mistakes
  • You're responsible for what you write.
  • Keep messages on-topic, and don't cross-post.
  • Respect others' privacy. Don't share private information about other users in public.
  • Keep in mind that the author of a forum post is the copyright owner of that post but by posting it in a publicly accessible forum has effectively placed it in the public domain. In our understanding, anyone can quote from any message, provided that they state who the author is, the post date, and the URL where the post was published.
  • Respect copyrights. Do not use copyrighted material without proper attribution as stated by the copyright owner. Also, do not take avatars or other graphics posted by users and use them as your own without explicit permission.
  • Remember that moderators have final say.
