Dr. Gavrielides is an international expert in human rights, criminal and restorative justice. He is the Founder and Director of The IARS International Institute, a user-led NGO that empowers marginalised groups to influence social policy in areas such as youth, justice and rights. He has also founded the Restorative Justice for All Institute (RJ4All).

He is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Criminology of Simon Fraser University (Canada) as well as a Visiting Professor at Buckinghamshire New University (UK). Professor Gavrielides is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare, Youth Voice Journal and the Internet Journal of Restorative Justice. He has published extensively in the areas of crime, antisocial behaviour, victims and human rights, equality and justice.

He is an advisor to the European Commission’s security programmes, and the coordinator of a number of EU funded research projects on violent radicalisation, migration, restorative justice, youth and human rights. He has acted as an advisor to a number of governments including the Chilean and UK Ministries of Justice, the Mayor of London, the Council of Europe and the British Council in the Middle East.

Previously, he was the Chief Executive of Race on the Agenda, as well as the Human Rights Advisor of the UK’s Ministry of Justice. He has also worked as a Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Human Rights of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Bio

Nancy Pyrini has a Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education and a Master’s Degree in Cognitive Science. She first participated in a funded programme as research assistant when she was still an undergraduate student.

Since then she works in different types of projects, mainly under the HORIZON 2020 EU Research and Innovation programme and the Erasmus+ programme, in cooperation with prestigious Universities around the world. What Nancy enjoys most is the challenge of writing the research proposal.

Nancy is the founder and director of the International Conference on Information Communication Technologies in Education, known with the acronym ICICTE, held annually in Greece (www.icicte.org).

She has been appointed at the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious as primary school teachers after having passed successfully the state competition organised by the Supreme Council for Selection of Personnel the year 2005.

Abstract of the Presentation

Europe and the world are transforming so rapidly that some underprivileged children, for various reasons, are often not able to catch up with the developments and adapt accordingly so they fall behind. As a result they exhibit low educational performance and are vulnerable as regards early school leaving. An important common need of the school partners of the YOYO Consortium and the schools across Europe is to tackle the educational needs of the refuge children arriving in the European schools with the unprecedented and unexpected massive influx of refugees. First of all we need to deal with the trauma that the war, the uprooting, the long and tough trip away from home through Turkey to Europe and whatever else they have experienced in a traumatic way (for instance, the loss of beloved ones) have caused. The YOYO partner schools are presenting the good pedagogical practices that have been formed for tackling this crucial situation.

Bio

Dr. Theodoros Fouskas is a sociologist. He specializes in migration, migrant labour and migrant community organizations. Also, in precarious, low-status/low-wage employment, integration of third country nationals, undeclared work, irregular migration, access of migrants to healthcare, labour solidarity, social protection, political participation and trade unions in the reception societies. He has taught Sociology of migration, migration policy and integration policies at universitiesand in other academic institutions. He has authored 2 monographs and co-edited 1 collective volume. He has also published 10 chapters in collective volumes, 16 articles in international and Greek peer reviewed scholarly journals and 30 research and policy reports on migration issues. He has served as a reviewer for 10 journals and also a member of the editorial board in 2 of them. He has presented 74 papers at international and national conferences and workshops, and has organized 12 scientific events and 2 international summer schools on migration. Since 2005, he has participated as scientific coordinator, project manager and principal researcher in 30 European and national research programs for immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees and other vulnerable groups.

Abstract of the Presentation

Since 2015 Europe and particularly Greece have faced the largest refugee, asylum seeker and migrant arrivals in their recent history. As mentioned in the European Union’s (EU) Agendas for Integration, in fact, integration takes place locally, as part of everyday life (European Commission, 2005, 2011, 2015). To make the integration successful, one must include the host society in creating opportunities for full participation of third-country nationals (TCNs). The involvement of local communities in joint actions is crucial. This policy process at local level is characterized by the pushing of ideas from the bottom up and completes the integration initiatives of the central government. Article 78, Law 3852/2010 (Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic, 2010) suggests the foundation and operation of migrant consultative bodies at local level within the Greek municipalities entitled Migrant Integration Councils (MICs). These bodies, comprise an initiative that aimed to contribute significantly to promoting integration of third-country nationals. However, little research has been conducted concerning the MICs’ institution in Greece. This presentation examines the operation of MICs since their implementation and the necessity to give third-county nationals and local society actors the opportunity to exchange opinions, share experiences and practices and the urgent need to integrate third-county nationals into society and promote their active participation in Greek society via employment, education, social care and access to healthcare, and socio-cultural coexistence.

Erica Caredda is a project manager working for the Migration Unit and Rights and Justice Unit of CESIE, where she manages projects funded under the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (DG JUSTICE); Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (DG HOME) and National funded projects. The projects she carries out focus on contrasting racisms, xenophobia and discrimination on different grounds (both offline and online) and on fostering social and economic inclusion among the migrant communities living in Palermo, by promoting entrepreneurship education specifically tailored for migrant women and unaccompanied minors.

She has previously worked on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in Tunis, on promotion of migrant inclusion in Ankara and on the EU Education, Youth and Cultural policies at the Council of the European Union.

She holds a bachelor Degree in Political Science and International Relations and an Erasmus Mundus Double Master degree in Economic Policies (major in Knowledge and Innovation Policies).
